Quick quips: U2, Michael Jackson, Reba McEntire, Bob Dylan, Guns N’ Roses, Peter Hook, New Order
Bono announced at a press conference in Toronto that a covers version of the U2 album Achtung Baby is on its way. Commissioned by the British magazine Q, the album will include Patti Smith (Until the End of the World), Depeche Mode (So Cruel), Jack White (Love is Blindness) and Damian Rice (One).
Even more trouble for the Michael Jackson tribute scheduled for October 8 in Cardiff, Wales. Global Events Live, who is putting on the show with part of the Jackson family, recently offered tickets “buy 1 get 1 free” which outraged those who have already purchased tickets and gave the over thirty Jackson fan clubs who were calling for a boycott of the show more fodder.
Reba McEntire may be returning to TV. ABC has announced that they have picked up the pilot for a series called Malibu Country. Reba will play a mother of three who divorces her cheating husband and moves from Nashville to Mailbu where she’ll try to restart her music career and not let her family be influenced by the materialistic world around them. Dave Stewart is one of the producers.
McEntire previously spent six years on the series Reba.
An exhibit of the art of Bob Dylan is coming to New York’s Gagosian Gallery. 18 drawings and paintings will be on-display from September 20 to October 22.
Dates are starting to leak out for an October tour by Guns N’ Roses. At this point, only Orlando, Miami and Kansas City have been mentioned but further dates are sure to be announced in the coming days.
Peter Hook has told Rolling Stone how disappointed he is that New Order will reunite without him.
“Ultimately it’s my music they’re playing so it’s not the end of the world. I was instrumental, excuse the pun, in New Order for 34 years and they won’t take that from you unless they started releasing new records that eclipsed all the New Order stuff. And maybe they’ll do that, I don’t know. But I do know at this point in time there have been some really underhand, dirty business dealings that have enabled them to do this that I don’t agree with and I’m very saddened and upset by it. But it’ll come out in the wash.”
After a multi-year battle, it looks like artists will be granted a longer copyright period in Europe. Currently, the limit is set at 50 years which means some of the earliest records of the rock era, including those of artists like Cliff Richard, are coming into the public domain. According to an unnamed source within the European Union, that is likely to be extended to 70 years on Monday.
The move will be good for artists and labels alike as catalog sales have been growing over the last few years with the addition of digital downloading of older songs.
U2 close first day of Glastonbury
The Irish band thrilled a thoroughly soaked festival crowd with a set comprised of hits spanning their career from ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ to ‘Get on Your Boots’.
The biggest crowd of the day gathered by the Pyramid stage to see the group – Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton ‘ deliver ‘One’, ‘Where the Streets Have no Name’, ‘(Pride) In the Name of Love’, ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Elevation’, among other hits.
The Edge changed guitar between every song, while lead singer Bono wore his trademark sunglasses throughout.
The group were making their first ever Glastonbury appearance, after originally being booked to perform last year, but having to drop out due to Bono needing an urgent operation after sustaining a back injury.
At the end of their first encore track, ‘With or Without You’, Bono sang the words to ‘Love Will Tear us Apart’ by Joy Division, before leading an acapella version of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ along with the crowd, which led into ‘Moment of Surrender’.
Afterwards, Bono said: “One more, just because, one more? Because it’s been a while?” Before the band launched into final track ‘Out of Control’.
A BANG operative who witnessed the show said: “They lived up to it tonight ‘ the hype, the biggest band in the world, without a doubt. It was hit after hit after hit for so long.
“It was cold, man, it was wet out there, but they rocked everybody, everybody had a smile on their face. People say all sorts about Bono, but no matter what you think, you can’t argue with that show.”
Coldplay have ‘dreamed’ of playing at Glastonbury since they were children
The ‘Every Teardrop is a Waterfall’ hitmakers ‘ who will headline the festival in Somerset, South West England, on Saturday (25.06.11) ‘ admitted nerves are already mounting in anticipation of the event, which they believe is “the mother” of all music events.
Guitarist Jonny Buckland said: “It’s the ultimate festival, the mother of all festivals, the peak, and the one we dreamed of playing when we were kids. I’m already feeling nervous!”
Meanwhile, frontman Chris Martin compared receiving the phone call from Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis asking them to perform to being “asked to dance” by ‘Twilight star Robert Pattinson.
He joked: “It was like getting asked to dance by Robert Pattinson if you’re a young girl.”
Coldplay have performed at the festival four times previously, on smaller stages in 1999 and 2000 and headlining in 2002 and 2005.
The band will appear alongside fellow headliners Beyonce Knowles and U2 over the course of the festival and Jonny joked they are hoping the latter play a set which allows them to eclipse them in terms of performance.
He added to NME magazine: “We’re hoping they’ll do a B-sides and rarities set . with no lights. At least we’re definitely taller than U2, by about a foot.
