Get Ready for The Truths! The 29th of September will see the British alternative rock band The Truths releasing the debut album Above All… internationally on Aardvark Records. With an initial promotional music video for the song Everybody’s Crying Inside racking up thousands of views online and the single Miracle Drug’s addition to an ever increasing number of radio playlists – The Truths look set to put British rock music at its most visceral and emotional, back on the map . The band teamed up with the legendary producer Hugh Jones, whose credits include The Charlatans, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Bluetones and Gene. They also worked with respected producer/engineer Dare Mason, who has worked with the likes of Prince, Placebo, Tommy Tokyo and System 7. The album itself shows both the band’s chemistry as players and their ability to craft memorable and meaningful music. Also with front man Anthony Neale’s powerful vocal delivery and charismatic stage presence, the music will take you on an unforgettable emotional rollercoaster. The later is important since the songs were written by Anthony but developed by the band as a whole during live performance and touring – stretching and and re-configuring them into what has been described as ‘a sexy, aggressive wall of sound’. The album’s twelve tracks pretty much cover it all, dealing with life, love, relationships, rebellion and fighting for what you believe in. The songs range from arena sized anthems (Miracle Drug, Triptych, Against Perfection, Jumpcut and Hit The Streets) tempered by the intimate, almost ballad-like songs (Everybody’s Crying Inside, Moth to a Flame, Fear is the Key and Strangers). Pixies pull Israel gig. Pixies have pulled out of their first ever show in Israel citing ‘events beyond our control’ as the reason for the cancellation. The band was due to headline the Pic.Nic Festival in Tel Aviv on this Wednesday June 9, Lineup ; Placebo, G.S.S (Gorillaz Sound System), Editors, Klaxons, Carusella, Hank & Cupcakes. While the band has not publicly started the cancellation was in protest to the raid on the Gaza-bound aid flotilla, it is known that there were sent letters from human rights activists urging them to cancel the show because of Israel’s most recent attack. Last month, Elvis Costello cancelled his tour of Israel. On his website he wrote: “Then there are occasions when merely having your name added to a concert schedule may be interpreted as a political act that resonates more than anything that might be sung and it may be assumed that one has no mind for the suffering of the innocent. “I must believe that the audience for the coming concerts would have contained many people who question the policies of their government on settlement and deplore conditions that visit intimidation, humiliation or much worse on Palestinian civilians in the name of national security. “I am also keenly aware of the sensitivity of these themes in the wake of so many despicable acts of violence perpetrated in the name of liberation. “It is a matter of instinct and conscience. “I cannot imagine receiving another invitation to perform in Israel, which is a matter of regret, but I can imagine a better time when I would not be writing this. “With the hope for peace and understanding. Elvis Costello

Newcomer Pixie Lott has achieved a dream start to her chart career by going straight in at number one with her debut single Mama Do. The 18-year-old former stage school pupil knocked US hip-hop superstars the Black Eyed Peas from the top slot. The only other new entry inside the top 10 was When Love Takes Over by David Guetta and US singer Kelly Rowland. In the album chart, rock band Kasabian made their debut at number one with West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum. ‘Next pop diva’ It is the act’s third album and follows on from Empire, which also went into the chart at number one in 2006. The band beat the Black Eyed Peas, whose new release The End made third place, behind last week’s chart topper from Scottish songsmith Paolo Nutini. The debut album from Little Boots, who topped the BBC’s Sound of 2009, was a new entry at number five. Bruce Springsteen’s new greatest hits package and the latest record from Placebo also made their debuts inside the top 10. Lott, who is due to release her first album later this year, is the first British female artist in UK chart history to go straight to number one apart from reality TV chart stars including Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, according to the Official UK Charts Company. She responded to an advert in The Stage newspaper looking for the “next pop diva” and went on to sign with the management team who look after the Black Eyed Peas – who she has displaced in the chart.

With a thirteen year history that takes in five studio albums, ten million album sales, breakdowns, clean ups and the dizzy swell of global success, Placebo are set to return with their first new album since the release of ‘Meds’ in 2006. Released on June 8th, the new album, titled ‘Battle For The Sun’, is preceded by its first WORLDWIDE EXCLUSIVE PLAY of the title track from the new album by BBC Radio One DJ, Zane Lowe, from 7pm on March 17th.
Recorded over three months by producer Dave Bottrill (chosen by the band largely because of his work with Tool) in his Toronto studio and mixed in London by My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails supremo Alan Moulder, Placebo’s sixth album is a startling, alive, vital and boundary-vaulting record that marks a whole new era for a band that were in need of a change.
Upon completion of the ‘Meds’ tour that took in stadium appearances in Chile, Mexico, Brazil, France and Germany, personal relationships within the band had become strained leading to an emotional split with Steve Hewitt, their drummer since 1996. Having made four albums that have sold over a million copies each (1998’s ‘Without You I’m Nothing’, 2000’s ‘Black Market Music’, 2003’s ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ and ‘Meds’ in 2006) and circled the globe together countless times, it was understandably an emotional split. Hewitt was replaced by 22-year old Californian Steve Forrest, who the band first spotted playing with one of their US support bands Evaline in 2006. ‘We were looking for somebody whose enthusiasm could rub off on us,’ explains Brian. ‘Someone who would experience all of these things that we’d already experienced for the first time and for their excitement to raise us up out of our jadedness and make us into kids again.’
Musically refreshed by their new line-up, the band also set about changing their business surroundings. When their contract with Virgin Records expired, Placebo were reluctant to throw themselves back into the major label machine. They grasped the opportunity of complete artistic freedom by self-funding the recording of ‘Battle for The Sun’. They then took the brave and uncompromising step to secure licensing and distribution agreements for the record with a number of smaller labels in each territory – beginning with a distribution deal with PIAS for Europe – so as to own the record themselves.
‘We’ve made a record about choosing life, about choosing to live, about stepping out of the darkness and into the light,’ explains Brian. ‘Not necessarily turning your back on the darkness because it’s there, it’s essential; it’s a part of who you are, but more about the choice of standing in the sunlight instead.’
‘I’m very optimistic about the future,’ concludes Brian. ‘I’m in a positive frame of mind and a good head space. It’s very exciting. There’s a lot of life in the old dog just yet.’
