The brash and edgy sarcasm of Jimmy Young, frontman, guitarist and songwriter of rock powerhouse People, inspired him to dub the L.A. based band’s debut The Cliche-but in reality, between their blistering live performances, hard hitting, deep and melodic songwriting, futuristic space punk rock vibe and inspiring star-studded rock collaborations make them pretty damn original. While the album’s first single and video for “The Kids” hit nationwide and build mightily on People’s intense West Coast cult following, old and young modern rock fans looking for the real deal will love the fact that Young got veteran punk/metal producer Dave Jerden (Jane’s Addiction, Alice in Chains, Mary’s Danish) to produce and Jerden’s right hand sound guy, Bryan Carlstrom (Billy Idol, The Offspring) to engineer. Before they even get acquainted with Young’s sharp, cliche free songwriting, these discriminating fans will no doubt claim the ten song set as a piece of rock history because it’s the last recording to feature former longtime Marilyn Manson bassist Gidget Gein, who died of a heroin overdose in October 2008, five days after he played with People at The Roxy and just before the band was set to do a Northeastern tour with Semi Precious Weapons. While the current lineup of the band-including co-founder and Chicago bred drummer Matty O. (aka “O”), keyboardist Grant Rhodes and new bassist Matt Powers-is excited about celebrating the legacy of Gein and the inspiration his musical and visual art brought to People’s first full-length recording, they’re definitely focused on the incredibly bright future. The major buzz they’ve generated from the two years the group has headlined in L.A. (at The Troubadour, El Rey and Sunset Strip landmarks like Viper Room, House of Blues) is about to reach the Midwest as People performs in New York at Sullivan Hall in June and at the indie rock festival D-Fest in Tulsa (known by many as “the next South By Southwest). The video for “The Kids”-a track lamenting the lack of social consciousness and political motivation of those who grew up in the grunge era-will soon air on outlets like MTV2, Fuse and Much Music, and People has over 30,000 online fans between the band’s myspace page and that of Powers, a solo artist in his own right who released his debut album Neverending Aftermath in 2007. Another cut getting major traction is the blistering “Song For The People,” which addresses the hypocrisy of bands who act too good for their fans and reminds them that at the end of the day, we’re all the same, and no matter what we go through, we’re still alive and kicking. “Cheap Money” is Young’s ode to the way materialistic people in L.A. think they can use money as a way to manipulate people. Dave Jerden says, “I’ve made my share of records, but every once in a while a project comes along that is just plain fun to do. Working with People was not only fun but a creative experience for myself.”

The Xcerts plans for their next single

the-xcerts-2THE XCERTS’ story began around the turn of the century when then 13-year-olds Murray MacLeod (vocals, guitar) and Jordan Smith (bass, vocals) met in the headmaster’s office of their school in Aberdeen. In 2006 they relocated to Brighton and met drummer and Exeter exile Tom Heron, where the line-up of THE XCERTS was finalised. After a barrage of dates with Future of the left, Bat for Lashes, Biffy Clyro, Make Model, Cage the Elephant, Brakes, Get Cape.Wear Cape. Fly and Fighting with Wire and recent supports with Enter Shikari and Feeder, THE XCERTS are gearing up for recording their debut full length album late summer with producer Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers / Idlewild) . They’re a double edged sword of ferocious guitar and dainty, poetic words - a distorted pop band who fuse the influences of fellow countrymen Idlewild and Biffy Clyro with the thoughtful approach to songwriting of old school ‘emo’ bands like Jimmy Eat World and Bright Eyes. With support from Radio 1, XFM, MTV2, Rock Sound and !Kerrang, and a work ethic of epic proportions with a live show to match, these are exciting times for the Aberdeen / Exeter and Brighton based trio. “Nothing short of astonishing” - !Kerrang “Ludicrously Punchy” – Steve Lamacq “’The Xcerts are going to be making big strides in 2008” - Drowned in Sound Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut album ‘In The Cold Wind We Smile’ The Xcerts can now reveal plans for their next single. ‘Just Go Home’ will be released on 8th June through Xtra Mile Recordings as a download on iTunes and all major DSPs. Annie also has a new mix available for download through the www.anniemacpresents.com site. Its called Annie Mac’s Man Mix, and here is how Annie explains it coming together.

‘This mix was done one hundred per cent live in my little studio. There were lots of ups (raving around in my dressing gown) and downs (throwing CDs at walls and potty mouth expulsions of frustration) but I’m generally happy with it. The title came from a conversation with Toddla T after I DJ’d at the Warehouse Project in Manchester where he asked me why I ‘man’ it. You can hear the conversation at the top of the mix. It’s also a little audio rant on how there’s ‘too many men’ and not enough girls in the dubstep raves. Thanks to MC Spitfire for gracing the cover with his tattoo. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.’

Annie’s Biography
Born and bred in Dublin to a family immersed in musicality, Annie left home at 17 to attend Queens University in Belfast, where she was bitten by the clubbing bug after visiting the city’s legendary Shine club nights. Inspired to purchase her first set of decks, Annie taught herself to mix using old funk and soul records bought from local charity shops. Following a stint as part of Shine’s marketing team and four months living in Manhattan, Annie made the move to London, working simultaneously as a TV & Radio plugger, a freelance Broadcasting Assistant and a presenter for the SBN, before she approached Radio 1. Initially employed as a BA, her natural flair got her noticed by management and she was soon standing in for Mary Anne Hobbs.

Annie’s show on Radio 1 began in July 2004, when, working as a assistant producer on Zane Lowe’s show, she impressed Radio 1 bosses with her demos and her determination.

Since then her show has gone from strength to strength. Annie Mac’s Mash Up on Friday nights on Radio 1 has attracted a host of loyal followers from around the world and sees Annie play the cutting edge dance music which she has become known for. Annie has established herself firmly as part of Radio 1’s specialist output.

Annie is also a talented club DJ and is booked regularly to play the UKs most credible clubs. Annie has just completed her annual DJ tour ‘Annie Mac Presents…’ which she has hosted for 3 years running. Annie personally chooses the line-up of DJs for her tour, both established and up-and-coming to play in her favourite clubs across the UK. 2007 has seen Annie DJ at more festivals than ever, plus regular dates in Ibiza and around the world.

Her TV work has seen Annie contribute regularly to BBC2’s The Culture show, reviewing new music releases. She has also done work for MTV2 presenting ‘Gonzo’. In October 2007 Annie helped launch BBC Switch, the BBC’s offering for 12-16 year olds. It was announced that Annie would front Switch, a brand new Sunday night Radio 1 show, and co-host a new weekly music TV show ‘Sound’ alongside Nick Grimshaw on BBCTWO every Saturday afternoon.

Since her show began, Radio 1 have been working Annie hard. She has stood in for Jo Whiley, Pete Tong and most recently Zane Lowe in January 2008 co-hosting alongside the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Kasabian and Radiohead. From the end of February 2008, Annie Mac will host Saturdays and Sundays 1pm-4pm, covering the slot during Sara Cox’s maternity leave.
