Fantastic and fun new digital single, taken from the brand-new, 52-part, BBC children’s animation series, launching on CBeebies 31st January 2011.
Based on the successful range of books by Michael De Souza and Genevieve Webster, the series follows the adventures music-making, skateboarding, crime-fighting Rastamouse and his crew!
Music – reggae, rap and hip-hop – is crucial to the series, and many of the stories have strong musical themes. Stories are fast paced, fun and the dialogue is a cool blend of English, Street and Patois, often interspersed with rhyming verse. The show has positive universal values and a philosophy of ‘Makin’ a bad ting good’.
Rastamouse features the voice and vocals of actor / presenter / DJ Reggie Yates. The music and songs are by writer Andy Kingslow (http://www.myspace.com/akingslow) who has worked with Mr Scruff, Lily Allen, Mia, Dizzee Rascal, Future Cut, Corrine Bailey Rae and others. The music is recorded using real instruments.
CBeebies will be promoting the release ‘on-air’ and as part of their channel launch. There will be various merchandise spin-offs, with a possible live show at some point in the future.
EMI will be releasing a CD and download soundtrack album in May featuring music from the series plus bonus material.
The ‘Dog Days Are Over’ group have been writing their second album since autumn last year, and guitarist Rob Ackroyd said the group are now poised to enter the famous Abbey Road studio in London where The Beatles recorded much of their material. He said: “Work on the second album has begun with producer Paul Epworth and there is talk of booking out Abbey Road for a month in April or May to record. Which is nice.”
The musician also revealed that while he and group leader Florence Welch see eye to eye on most musical genres, but finds himself at odds when it comes to her taste in mainstream songs.
He added to Gibson.com: “Florence’s and my taste in music often overlap in harmonious fashion; we’re both big fans of hip-hop and American indie.
“But she’s also a big fan of unadulterated pop music, which cuts through me like a knife.”
The guitarist – who has also recently been working with Pixie Geldof, daughter of former Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof on her new band Violet – also told how he had managed to meet his rock guitar hero through playing with the machine.
He added: “I think people like Guns n’ Roses guitarists Izzy Stradlin and Slash really glamorised the guitar for me when I was a kid. In the early ’90s it seemed like every weekend was Guns N’ Roses weekend on MTV and I was galvanized by Slash.
“I kind of fulfilled my dream of meeting Slash last summer when Florence And The Machine shared a festival bill with him.”
For twin brothers Andrew and Brian Chaplin, Locnville is a place where their multiple musical influences and mixed backgrounds come together. Born in New York and raised in South Africa, they were exposed to a wide diversity of cultures and people from a very early age. Having spent the better part of their lives immersed in the music creation, the recorded their first song ‘Amnesia’ at the age of 7; By the age of 11 they recorded their first full set of rock songs written by themselves and inspired by rock acts such as AC/DC, Kiss, Staind, Nirvana and Limp Bizkit. While in their teenage years Andrew and Brian moved back to the US where they became fans of Hip Hop creating connections with the local scene and performing their own music. Back in South Africa they became exposed to electronic music, which was exploding locally. All these different experiences and musical influences added up to what Locnville is today. The title track and first single from the newly incarnated Locnville, the contagious and hypnotic ‘Sun In My Pocket’ shot to the top of the radio charts in South Africa, becoming an instant hit and kick starting their career locally to rave reviews from fans and top celebrities alike. ‘Sun In My Pocket’ was named ‘Song Of The Year’ and ‘Jam Of The Summer’ in South Africa. Locnville became the fastest trending buzzword for local media, soon to be South Africa’s new proud export. “We wanted to make the kind of music we enjoyed listening to, that’s what inspired Locnville and the album. We combined elements of the music we like and altered it to make it our own” – Brian comments. Andrew shares – “Sun In My Pocket is actually a pretty funny story, I wrote the chorus without my brother and he didn’t like it at first. The inspiration for the song didn’t really come from anything specific, more the world as a whole. We’re basically saying that you control your world by metaphorically having the sun in your pocket and the moon in your hands. I think a lot of people get that on some level, and that’s why they enjoy listening to it!” Their second single ‘6 Second Poison’ hit the airwaves right after the album was released, surpassing the record set by Sun In My Pocket’ and reaching an even broader audience by becoming a club hit. Says Andrew: “ It was inspired by a moment after a show we did a few years back with a previous project. We were speaking to this girl when our producer at the time took us aside and basically told us not to mess around with her because she was ‘poison’. We thought that would be great for a track, so we wrote the song”. Debut album ‘Sun In My Pocket’ was entirely written and produced by Andrew and Brian recorded LMX Studios in Cape Town and mastered in the UK by Wez Clarke. Originally released in South Africa in February of 2010 the album went on to surpass Platinum status within the first month of release.

During the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Fedde le Grand announced that he joined the dance4life family and as of April he will become a worldwide ambassador for the organization. Drawing inspiration from hip-hop, funk and electronic dance the Dutch artist has been on the party scene in the Netherlands since 1998. The DJ and producer has gained global recognition in recent years as his career has seen him collaborate with artists including Grammy Award-winning Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am and Madonna who used le Grand’s 2006 No. 1 hit ‘Put Your hands up for Detroit’ to promote her sticky and sweet tour. 2009 brings the release of Fedde le Grand’s first artist album ‘Output’. During an intimate Q&A with dance4life in Miami, Fedde explained what inspired him to join “As an artist I see what dance4life does for young people and it is so close to what I do, so I feel very connected to dance4life already and see endless possibilities to strengthen their organization. We will start by donating a percentage of the ticket prize to dance4life of my Scandinavian concerts in September of this year.” Dance4Life uses the universal language of music and dance as well as youth icons to connect with young people across the globe. Ambassadorship from artists such as Fedde le grand is invaluable to support dance4life in its aim of empowering youth to push back the spread of HIV and AIDS. Wessel van Eeden, global music and media manager at dance4life says “We’re delighted that Fedde le Grand, as one of the biggest rising stars of the international dance music scene, has decided to join dance4life, we welcome him and look forward to developing the global partnership.”
Jack Allsopp – Just Jack
Born in North London, Jack grew up on a diet of dance music including, break dance, electro hip hop and house. A wannabe break dancer at eight, his love of dance music led him to start DJing at the age of fifteen and he soon became submerged in DJ culture and US garage. After completing a degree in Furniture Design Jack enrolled on a community music production course, which heightened his awareness to the potential of sampling. This inspired Jack to concentrate on perfecting his sound by night and to take on a series of unfulfilling jobs by day. “I’ve been a washer upper, a flower arranger, a runner for a TV post production company… I even worked at Gap for while. That made me all the more determined to work at the music. I would get this down time in a studio and be recording all night, and working at Gap all day. It was knackering but it was very inspiring time.” Jack’s debut album, ‘The Outer Marker’ is a collection of songs about modern life, relationships and the pressures of social situations. Originally released by the independent label RG Records, Just Jack’s debut album ‘The Outer Marker’ received fantastic reviews. ‘The Independent’ described it as “impressive”, Q said, “masterful”, the ‘NME’ said “Awesome. Welcome Just Jack, you rule!”, and ‘The Big Issue’ saluted Jack as “The new troubadour of daily life in the UK”.
“The Outer Marker” has recently been re-packaged and re-released and now includes extra tracks and the video for ‘Snowflakes’. It has been receiving plenty of airplay and remixes from the likes of Aphrodite and a famous Cure bootleg of ‘Snowflakes’ is now thrusting Just Jack into the limelight. Recently, Jack and his band played his third ever gig to a great crowd at the Glastonbury Dance Tent and he will be performing at the V Festivals later this summer.
Jack Allsopp on Just Jack:
“I never had heroes and never wanted to be like other musicians”, he says. “I have no affiliations to anyone, I’m not part of a gang, I’m not a part of a scene and I don’t have a sound that’s obviously a part of a scene. I’m Just Jack.” Following the success of Just Jack’s club dates this month, he now embarks on a UK summer tour in support of his stunning new album ‘All Night Cinema’ (June 8th), produced by Jack and Jay Reynolds. Book-ending the 5-date summer tour are festival appearances in Birmingham (June 6th) and Glasgow (June 14th). Jack also plays Glastonbury at the end of June. ‘All Night Cinema’ sees Just Jack at his blistering best, the new single ‘Embers’ (March 30th) has proved to be a big radio hit and is on the Radio One A-List. The second single from the album is set to be ‘Doctor Doctor’ out June 1st. Jack’s recent club tour where he premiered tracks from his new album has been greeted with rave reviews. ‘Blessed with an everyman appeal and a pleasing poetic facility, he performs with a natural charm that few pop artists are able to muster.’

Filthy Dukes, first they were djs, now they are a band and djs and also producers. They say: It was just Olly and Tim playing records, it still is in fact, then we started to work with Mark to make music. We have now made an album, it’s out in March 2009. We have also made singles that are part of this album, some are out before february so keep an ear and eye out because they should be pretty good and will probably have some great remixes.
We run a club night called Kill Em All that has been going for 5 years, this particular disco is held at Fabric. We have had guests like Justice, Erol Alkan, Bloc Party, Crystal Castles, Late Of The Pier, Chemical Brothers, James Murphy, Jackson & His Computer Band, Zombie Nation, Schinichi Osawa, Brodinski & Simian Mobile Disco. It’s a good party.
Our album, like most personal art forms is a result of our influences, these range from Tangerine Dream to Hot Chip, Can to SMD, Roxy Music to Soulwax, Hip Hop to Krautrock. You know, a bit of old stuff and a bit of modern, plus loads of other things it would take too long to list.
We have a mixing desk which was made and used by Connie Plank, he was possibly the most important German producer ever, and had a great beard. We also have a ton of old synths which we have used to make this album, Roland Juno 60, Arp 2600, Moog Voyager, Roland Sh101 plus loads of pedals, distortion units and other geeky stuff.
In making this album we have worked with a collection of artists who we really like and most of them have also played Kill Em All, you will find out who these are in due course.
Ok I reckon that’s it for now, we are very excited about our album it took us ages but we love it, can’t wait for it to come out, and oh yes its called Nonsense In The Dark.
The only way to hear it at the moment is to come and see our live show, we play quite a lot of it. Our live show is damn good, so you should come along.
We also have nice bags.
