The Story: The privileged prep school teens on Manhattan’s Upper East Side first learn that Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”) is back in town the way they learn all the important news in their lives — from the blog of the all-knowing albeit ultra-secretive Gossip Girl. No one knows Gossip Girl’s identity, but everyone in this exclusive and complicated vicious circle relies on her website and text messages for the latest scoop. Even Serena’s closest friend, Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester, “Entourage”), is surprised to find that Serena has suddenly ended her self-imposed exile to boarding school and returned to Manhattan.
Once the Upper East Side’s most notorious party girl, Serena’s reasons for returning are mysterious, although they may have something to do with her younger brother Eric (Connor Paolo, “Alexander”). Whatever the reasons, the change in Serena is obvious, especially to Blair, whose friendship with Serena has always been competitive and difficult. When Serena was out of the picture, Blair enjoyed her time in the spotlight and she has no intention of going back to living in Serena’s shadow. Their uneasy relationship is further complicated by Blair’s boyfriend Nate (Chace Crawford, “The Covenant”), a young man uneasy with all the privileges that have been handed to him by his high-powered father Howie “The Captain” Archibald (Sam Robards, “The West Wing”). Now that Serena is back, Blair will have to fight to hold onto Nate’s attention. It also remains to be seen whether Blair’s loyal lieutenants — Katy (newcomer Nan Zhang) and Isabel (newcomer Nicole Fiscella) — will remain by her side or break ranks to follow Serena.
The tension between Blair and Serena isn’t lost on anyone in this crowd, since they all live for gossip and scandal — along with fashion, shopping and partying in Manhattan’s trendiest hot spots. This is a world you have to be born into, full of wealth, power, and people like Chuck (Ed Westwick, “Children of Men”). A friend of Nate’s since childhood, Chuck leads a reckless life, and constantly pushes Nate to explore his dark side.
The proverbial fish-out-of-water at the prep school are Dan (Penn Badgley, “John Tucker Must Die,” “The Bedford Diaries”) and his sister Jenny (Taylor Momsen, “Paranoid Park,” “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”), middle-class kids whose background keeps them on the fringes of this exclusive clique. Dan and Jenny are attending the school at the insistence of their father Rufus (Matthew Settle, “Into The West”), a former rocker turned art gallery owner, determined to give his kids a first-class education. Rufus has a history with Serena’s mother Lily (Kelly Rutherford, “Melrose Place”), a socialite who hides her past as a dancer and rock groupie. When a chance encounter brings Dan to Serena’s attention, he suddenly finds himself dating the girl of his dreams. The more Dan discovers about the real Serena, the more he’s challenged to make sense of her world. Dan’s sister Jenny is the youngest of the group and wants desperately to be accepted. The price she’ll have to pay for popularity will take a toll, but at the moment, Jenny is just thrilled to have entry into this glamorous world.
Dan and Serena’s relationship is further complicated by the arrival of Dan’s friend Vanessa, a Brooklyn rebel and loner who doesn’t approve of Serena’s world of money, fashion shows and fund raisers. Vanessa’s attempts to pull him back to his roots will cause friction between Dan and Serena.
Keeping track of the shifting friendships, jealousies and turmoil in this wealthy and complex world isn’t easy, but it’s what Gossip Girl does best.

A major character returns, then dies at the start of a new version of the series. This isn’t your ’90s show.Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer are the kinds of writers who bring back popular people from the dead only to kill them. In 1997, “Melrose Place” viewers were devastated when a car struck and killed Sydney Andrews(Laura Leighton) on her wedding day. But in the pilot of Slavkin’s and Swimmer’s remake, Sydney is alive and looking sensational in her middle age — until she’s discovered floating in the apartment complex pool about 10 minutes into the show. That the executive producers have chosen to kick off Continue reading →

People has unveiled its 20th annual 100 Most Beautiful People list, and overall we have to say the list was fairly predictable. Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry and People’s Sexiest Man Alive Hugh Jackman all made the list along with Michelle Obama and those much discussed arms of hers. Pop phenoms Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Zac Efron, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato were also not shocking additions. We highly approve of relative newcomers and on-screen couples Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart from “Twilight,” and Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto of “Slumdog Millionaire.” We’re 100% behind the decision for a “Stars Without Makeup” section, including our favorite supermodel ever, Cindy Crawford, and the cute girls of “90210. Kudos also to the comedians on the list who prove nothing is sexier than a sense of humor. Jimmy Fallon, Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Mann and Chelsea Handler all made the cut. Now on to the more surprising decisions! Christina Applegate made the cover! We’ve loved the actress since her early days on “Married with Children,” and though the show isn’t a smash, we were glad to see Applegate rebound into the spotlight with “Samantha Who?” as well as a stint on Broadway. Though she was an unlikely choice, her breast cancer double mastectomy and recovery story is surely one of the most beautiful tales we witnessed all year. At 37 years old, Applegate remains as pretty on the outside as she is in her heart. Here’s where People’s list starts to fall off. Aside from the obvious choices that bored us, the magazine screws up and picks Taylor Momsen, young Jenny from “Gossip Girl,” instead of Leighton Meester or Blake Lively, the stunning Blair and Serena. Sure, they might have been on last year’s list, but they are far and above the prettiest young things on TV. And the worst thing about the list? People singles out two of the Jonas Brothers—Nick and Joe Jonas—and excludes Kevin Jonas from the list. Way to be completely shallow! As women who don’t even fully understand or appreciate the obsession with the Jonas Brothers, we still think this move is totally screwed up, and thus have soured on the list. The 100 Most Beautiful People in the World issue hits newsstands later this week.
Leighton Meester is ‘The Girl with Kaleidoscope Pants’ Gossip Girl starlet Leighton Meester is featured in the April 2009 issue of The New York Times in a vibrant editorial entitled, ‘The Girl with Kaleidoscope Pants.’ Wearing a fire-red lipstick shade, Leighton is captured by Terry Richardson who recently shot her alongside fellow “Gossip Girl” stars for Rolling Stone. Leighton explains in the interview that her style is very different than that of her character on the show: “Her style is a little expensive for my taste, but it loudly communicates that she is who she is and that she does what she does. I find that admirable. And she’s always dressed appropriately, which I can’t always say about myself.” In this editorial, Leighton Meester wears colorful creations from Alexander McQueen, Diane Von Furstenberg, Jonathan Saunders, Roberto Cavalli, and Gucci.
So her fans can fake an orange glow just like LiLo, the 22-year-old actress is selling a DHA self-tanning mist which includes “caramel, Chardonnay extracts, gogi berry, and a sugar-coconut base.”
Chardonnay? I’d have thought she’d opt for Champagne!
So, if you’re pale-skinned and can’t tan, or you’re avoiding the sun for health or aesthetic reasons, Lindsay Lohan’s self-tanner might be the best product you’ve seen any celeb launch… for others, this is just another excuse to make fun of her.
More about Lindsay Lohan.
Lindsay Dee Lohan was born in New York City, on 2 July 1986, to Dina Lohan and Michael Lohan. She began her career at age three as a Ford model, and also made appearances in over sixty television commercials, including spots for The Gap, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, and Jell-O (opposite Bill Cosby). Lohan made her acting debut in 1996 as the third actress to play Ali Fowler in the television drama “Another World” (1964). Shortly afterward, she was hand-picked by Oscar-nominated writer Nancy Meyers as estranged twin sisters in an adaptation by Walt Disney Pictures of a novel by Erich Kästner, which marked Meyers’ directorial debut. Lohan’s first feature film, The Parent Trap (1998), a remake of The Parent Trap (1961), was a modest commercial success, earning her widespread critical acclaim, and a Young Artist award for Best Leading Young Actress in a Feature Film, as well as Blockbuster Entertainment and YoungStar award nominations.
After signing a three-movie contract with Disney, she returned to the small screen to star in the made-for-TV movies Life-Size (2000) (TV) (opposite Tyra Banks) and Get a Clue (2002) (TV) (opposite Bug Hall). She also appeared as Rose in the pilot episode of the short-lived comedy series “Bette” (2000), which starred Bette Midler.
In June 2001, Lohan took a brief hiatus from acting. Her music career was launched over a year later, when Estefan Enterprises made a five-album production deal with her in September 2002, and she signed a recording contract with the reactivated Casablanca Records.
But Lohan was not turning her back on her blossoming acting career. Just over a month previously, she had been cast opposite Jamie Lee Curtis for another Disney adaptation of a novel, this time of a fantasy comedy by Mary Rodgers. Freaky Friday (2003), a remake of Freaky Friday (1976), was a huge hit (generating over US$160 million in worldwide box office receipts), and critics were spellbound by delightful performances from Lohan and Curtis (who went on to receive a Golden Globe nomination for her work). In addition, Lohan won the 2004 MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Female, as well as a Saturn award nomination and another Young Artist award nomination.
Lohan relocated permanently to Los Angeles, California, between projects, and moved into an apartment with fellow actress Raven-Symoné. She also dated pop star Aaron Carter for a short time.
Lohan’s next acting role was the title character in the comedy Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (2004), a Disney adaptation of the novel by Dyan Sheldon. The film received scathing reviews upon its release and died a quick death at the box office, but even the harshest of critics were impressed by Lohan’s charming turn as aspiring actress Lola.
Lohan’s next project, Mean Girls (2004) saw her reunite with Freaky Friday (2003) director Mark Waters. Inspired by a non-fiction book by Rosalind Wiseman and written by “Saturday Night” (1975) scribe Tina Fey, the high-school comedy-drama opened to glowing reviews, and grossed $86 million in the US. This earned her status as a bankable actress, and a salary of $7.5 million for the Donald Petrie romantic comedy Just My Luck (2006).
One of the most sought-after young actresses in the industry, she is staring in Bobby (2006) (opposite Nick Cannon), The Fashionistas (2010) (based on the novel by Lynn Messina), the high school dramas “Dramarama” (1983), “Gossip Girl” (2007)(based on the novel by Cecily von Ziegesar), and the Disney fantasy adventure Herbie Fully Loaded (2005) (a pseudo-sequel to The Love Bug (1968)). On top of a thriving film career, Lohan released her debut album, called “Speak,” which hit shelves in December 2004.
In her spare time, Lohan enjoys swimming, basketball, shopping, singing, reading, writing, gymnastics, collecting Beanie Babies, roller-blading, and playing with her siblings Ali Lohan, Dakota and Michael Lohan.
Zac Efron brings holiday cheer to the kids at the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA on Friday (December 19) in Los Angeles.
The 21-year-old actor joined Gifts.com in giving presents out to all the patients at the hospital. Zac took the time to shake everyone’s hands, sign autographs and pose for pictures.
Zac’s former Summerland co-star Lori Loughlin recently had this to say about his relationship with Vanessa Hudgens: “The fact that he and Vanessa have been together for so long speaks to who he is also as a person. He tends to be that one woman guy and just focus on that; again not a player, not somebody’s who’s taking advantage of this new found fame or I’m sure the many girls that are throwing themselves at him. He seems to very level headed about the whole thing.”
