Summer Sundae Weekender grows

summersundae Summer Sundae Weekender has always been about a holistic experience. Not just content with putting together one of the choicest music lineups of the year – an exciting, eclectic combination of the hottest established names (The Streets, The Charlatans, The Zutons, Bon Iver, Saint Etienne, Mystery Jets) and the best and brightest in upcoming talent (Dan Black, Micachu and the Shapes, Chairlift, Noisettes) – the festival also has, true to its family-friendly ethos, always taken pains to create an environment which looks to fully engage both youngsters and adults alike. And this year is certainly no exception, with a myriad of brand new features and old favourites, with a twist. Chief amongst the new additions: the festival has introduced The Garden, a beautiful family zone sanctuary in the middle of the grounds, surrounded by a floral display, hosted by a giant scarecrow and decorated with wild and fanciful creatures. A delightfully esoteric oasis of fun amidst the hubbub of the festival, it is the place to go to be amused and entertained, with a giant flower regularly coming to life, and even a giant Mad Hatter’s tea party – a lavish, interactive theatrical re-enactment of the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ classic involving musical chairs, musical statues, cabaret dancers and games galore. Activities for the younger crowd will include weird science experiments, jewellery making, giant board games, drum and music workshops, storytelling and graffiti boards.   Also new for 2009 is the Silent Disco, held from 9pm each night in the comedy tent, where punters will get a pair of headphones on entry and a choice of DJs to tune into – a sight in its own right. Meanwhile, come evening time the Phrased and Confused tent will be transformed into a wind powered film tent, The Phoenix Square cinema tent, which will run from 8pm to 1am each night. We are also proud to announce some returning favourites, chiefly the Phrased and Confused spoken word tent, which proved to be an undoubted hit in its freshman year, featuring a range of new collaborations, quizzes, talks and much, much more besides. The always popular eFestivals comedy tent returns for its fifth year as well, running all day till mid-evening and hosted by the Leicester Comedy Festival, while children will flock in droves to the magical, bespoke Kidzone, especially with its outer space theme this year.  Besides all that, there is a multitude of delights to tantalise and entice visitors. Once again claiming its position as one of the greenest music festivals in the UK, Summer Sundae Weekender is not only encouraging people to arrive by bike but providing them with acclaimed, secure bike parking. There will also be a debut visit by Inertia flat landing bike displays (where you’ll witness amazing bike tricks with the wheels never leaving the ground), Amnesty yoga sessions, and a wide variety of food and drink, including the return of the Orange tree real ale and cocktail bar. Just a few more reasons why Summer Sundae Weekender is a destination festival this season.
