Bob Marley’s last gig to be released The last ever concert by Bob Marley will be released as a live album in February. ‘Uprising, Live Forever’ was recorded at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh on September 23, 1980. It features Marley performing classics like ‘No Woman No Cry’, ‘Jammin” and ‘Is This Love’. “Bob’s music has always conveyed a message of hope, unity and love. It has brought countless people together as it did that night 30 years ago in Pittsburgh. To hear that music today and to be able to share it with a new generation shows that Bob is as relevant today as he was 30 years ago,” says Rita Marley. Bob Marley died on May 11, 1981. UB40 ‘LABOUR OF LOVE IV’ On 8th February UB40 will release ‘Labour Of Love IV’, their first Labour of Love album since 1998’s ‘Labour of Love III’. Someone once claimed UB40 are to reggae what the Beatles and Rolling Stones were to American rhythm and blues and as they release the latest installment of their best-selling Labour Of Love series, the truth of this statement is undeniable. Literally millions of people from across the globe have developed a love for Jamaican music after hearing UB40, and the band’s commitment to their early influences is as strong as ever.
The Labour of Love series began in 1983, with a number one album and number one single (‘Red, Red Wine)’. This was followed in 1989 by LOL II, which spawned a no.4 single (‘Kingston Town’) and two US Billboard Top 10s. Another Top 10 album, LOL III, and single (‘Come Back, Darling’) was released in 1998. ‘Labour Of Love IV’ continues what has become a passion for the band; to share their love of reggae classics, some well-known, some not so, with the public-at-large. Recorded at the band’s Reflex Studios in Birmingham in the Spring 2009, the album comprises 14 tracks. Covers such as Delroy Wilson (‘Close To Me’), John Holt songs (‘I Don’t Want To See You Cry’ and ‘Man Next Door’) and Rocksteady vocal groups the Melodians (‘Get Along Without You Now’) and The Paragons (‘Holiday’) bestow this new album with such an infectious sense of joy, it’s hard to believe it’s the fourth in the series and not the first. UB40, just like other dedicated reggae fans, fervently want such artists – including Theo Beckford (‘Easy Snappin’’), Errol Dunkley (‘You’re Gonna Need Me’), Ken Parker (‘True True True’) and Hopeton Lewis (‘Boom Shacka Lacka’), who also contribute songs to Labour Of Love IV – to receive more recognition, and there’s now every chance of that happening with these mesmerising new versions. American soul stars Smokey Robinson (‘Tracks Of My Tears’), Sam Cooke (‘Bring It On Home To Me’) and Johnny Nash need no introduction here, except these songs were hugely popular within Caribbean communities, and had a lasting impact upon UB40 themselves. Johnny Nash was the first overseas’ act to cover a Bob Marley song and his ‘Cream Puff’ is a little-known gem from the very early seventies, when the Texan singer was being billed as “the King Of Reggae” in England. Robin Campbell saw him perform back then and says the band have wanted to cover Cream Puff for years. Labour Of Love IV is the first to feature another talented Campbell brother, Duncan, on lead vocals. Duncan would have been one of UB40’s vocalists right from the start had he not turned them down to pursue adventures around the world. Usually, when a world-famous band changes their lead singer, the transition isn’t exactly seamless. Duncan was a natural choice however – not only because he’s family but also because he sings with such feeling, like a man who’s come to claim his rightful legacy. Robin, Astro, Norman and Earl also sing lead vocals on various tracks on the album, and such versatility – twinned with UB40’s remarkable consistency – make it another wonderful addition to the series.

The Strokes Julian Casablancas has announced the UK release date for his debut solo album – ‘Phrazes For The Young’, as being October 19. (October 20 in the US) Revealed on his website , The Strokes man also revealed that fans will be able pre-order the album directly from his site soon. Casablancas confirmed he is planning to play gigs in the UK soon. “It will probably be October, roughly,” he said.
Mick Jagger and Joss Stone are to record a song together. The Rolling Stones frontman and the soul singer – who first collaborated in 2004 on ‘Lonely Without You’ for the ‘Alfie’ soundtrack – will perform a duet for a new album to coincide with the United Nation’s International Day of Peace on September 21. A source said: “Joss and Mick hit it off when they worked with producer Dave Stewart on the ‘Alfie’ soundtrack, so they were hoping to collaborate again. “When this project was suggested they were keen to get on board, especially considering the glittering cast of other musicians involved.” Mick and Joss have been working with Bob Marley’s sons Damian and Stephen, rapper Nas and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ soundtrack composer A.R. Rahman. The stars are currently working on the album at a Los Angeles studio, but there have been some disagreements about when recording should take place. Damian prefers to work at night, while Mick would rather record in the morning. The source added to Britain’s The Sun newspaper: “It’s incredibly challenging to get so many figures in the studio at a time that’s agreeable to everyone. “Damian’s a night owl whereas Mick likes to hit the studio in the morning. They eventually reached a compromise where by they will record from 5pm to midnight every day.”
At Will and The People gigs everyone gets involved in the party, even notoriously uptight London crowds find themselves letting go when faced with their infectious, genre-blending ska-rock-pop. “We are on a mission to bring the pogo back!” says Will Rendle, their 22 year old frontman. “I can’t understand bands that don’t engage the audience. At our gigs they become part of the show.” Support slots with their musical heroes The Police at Hyde Park Calling and with The Hoosiers on theirrecent tour prove that Will and The People retain their ability to connect when playing a bigger stage. Following their three dates on The Hoosiers tour the band’s myspace page received over 19,000 plays in6 days – an incredible strike rate. Growing up in a sleepy town on the south coast, the smart but easily bored Will was in and out of trouble until he found an outlet for his wayward energy. Inspired by his love of Bob Marley & TheWailers, The Specials, and Californian ska-punk pioneers Sublime (“My favourite band ever”), Will started playing the guitar and writing songs. “It immediately became everything to me,” says Will. “It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do since.” At 18 Will blew out a place at University and moved to Brighton, throwing himself into the local live music scene. The next couple of years were spent in local bands until, frustrated by their lack of focus, Will decided to put his own band together. But it wasn’t easy. “I wanted to live with my band and do everything with them,” he says now, “but I found it impossible to find people who were up for it as much as me, who wanted it as much as me.” Nevertheless, with persistence The People were found – Dan Lundholm (bass), Simon Hanson (drums), John Tilley (keyboards), and Alison Brown (backing vocals) – an incredibly loose and fluid unit that crosses over indie, ska, reggae, blues and rock. Their ability to turn their gigs into happenings soon got the band noticed. As the buzz about them spread, Will & The People landed themselves a recording deal within a few months of trying. After signing to RCA Label Group the band relocated to London where they are currently working on their debut album with producer Johnny Douglas. “I get so angry when I listen to albums and there are only three or four great songs and the rest is filler,” says Will, his eyes ablaze. “Even one bad song is too much filler. I want every song on our record to be brilliant so people want the whole album.” Few who know Will would bet against him realising this ambition. LENNY KRAVITZ is to team up with Carla Bruni on her next album. The rocker said he received a letter from her husband, French leader Nicolas Sarkozy, praising his work. And the note has reportedly paved the way for a collaboration between the star and the politician’s model-turned-singer partner Bruni, who Kravitz said he knew “back in the day.” Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, a source said: “The president confessed he and his wife were massive fans – and they even named which of Lenny’s songs were their favourites. He jumped at the chance to help out.”

There may have been other “retro” rock acts before him, but Lenny Kravitz was one of the first to not be pigeonholed to a single style as he touched upon such genres as soul, funk, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, folk, and ballads over the years. Born in New York on May 26, 1964 (his mother was actress Roxie Roker, best-known for her role as Helen Willis on the popular TV series The Jeffersons, and his father was a TV producer), Kravitz was raised in Los Angeles, where he found himself around countless musical giants as a youngster due to his parents friendships with the likes of Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Short, and Miles Davis. Kravitz was a member of the California Boys Choir until his teenage years, when he decided to pursue rock & roll while in high school and under the heavily influence of funk rocker Prince. Kravitz’s admiration of the Purple One was so great that he at first patterned his style and approach directly after Prince and became known as “Romeo Blue” (complete with blue contact lenses), but failed to land a recording contract.
In the late ’80s, Kravitz relocated back to New York City, where one of his roommates turned out to be actress Lisa Bonet (who played the part of Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show); they eventually got married. During this time, Kravitz wisely discarded his Prince-like approach and looked back to such ’60s/’70s classic rockers as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Marley, and the Beatles for inspiration. Kravitz found a kindred spirit in engineer Henry Hirsch (who would stick by Kravitz throughout his career). With a back-to-basics approach, his style was quite refreshing in the humorously gaudy late ’80s. He inked a recording contract with Virgin Records and issued his debut release, Let Love Rule, in 1989. Kravitz’s debut proved to be a surprise hit due to the success of the title track, which became a hit single and oft-aired video. A few critics were quick to assume that Kravitz’s retro look and sound were simply a shtick to get the public’s attention, but come the ’90s, it had become integrated into the mainstream (both musically and fashion-wise), proving that Kravitz was a bit of a trendsetter. It was around this time that Kravitz penned a major hit single, not for himself but for Madonna, who went to number one with the sultry track “Justify My Love.”
What should have been a time of happiness for Kravitz quickly turned sour as he and Bonet divorced by the early ’90s. Kravitz’s heartbreak was very evident in his sophomore effort, Mama Said, which was even stronger than its predecessor, highlighted by the Led Zep-like funk rocker “Always on the Run” (a collaboration with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash), as well as the mega hit with the Curtis Mayfield-esque soul ballad “It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over,” which confirmed that Kravitz’s success was no fluke. But the best was yet to come for Kravitz. His third release overall, 1993′s Are You Gonna Go My Way, is often considered to be the finest album front to back of his entire career, and with good reason: Every single song was a winner, including the up-tempo anthemic title track, which turned out to be one of MTV’s most played videos for that year. The album was a massive hit and Kravitz became an arena headliner stateside, as well as being featured on countless magazine covers.
Despite an almost two-year gap between albums, Kravitz’s fourth release, Circus, came off sounding unfocused and was a major letdown compared to his stellar previous few releases. Perhaps sensing that he needed to stir things up musically, Kravitz dabbled with electronics and trip-hop loops for his next album, 1998′s 5. Although not a huge hit right off the bat, the album proved to have an incredibly long chart life, spawning the biggest hit of Kravitz’s career, “Fly Away,” almost a year after its original release. With the single’s success, Virgin decided to cash in on the album’s sudden rebirth by reissuing it around the same time with a pair of extra added bonus tracks, one of which became another sizeable hit single, a remake of the Guess Who’s “American Woman” (which was used in the hit 1999 comedy movie Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me). Kravitz’s first best-of set, the 15-track Greatest Hits, was issued as a stopgap release in 2000, while his sixh studio release overall, Lenny, was issued a year later. Baptism followed in 2004. After starting a residential, commercial, and product design company called Kravitz Design, he recorded a funky version of John Lennon’s “Cold Turkey” for Amnesty International’s 2007 benefit compilation Instant Karma. Before the end of the year it was announced that Kravitz would return in 2008 with a new album, It Is Time for a Love Revolution. The album arrived in February, accompanied by a brief tour.
In addition to his own albums, Kravitz continues to pen songs for other artists and his compositions have appeared on albums by such rock heavyweights as Aerosmith and Mick Jagger, while he produced and wrote the majority of Vanessa Paradis’ obscure self-titled 1992 release.

On the balanced second album Hum Of Life (2006) Houweling finds his own voice in writing. The record brings many new opportunities for the band. The played the finest Dutch venues and festivals like Haarlems Bevrijdingspop with 150.000 visitors. The also had some decent airplay on Dutch radio. The third album, Back On Land is released on April 20th 2009. The band worked with renowned American engineer/producer Oz Fritz who is known for his Grammy-winning work with Tom Waits (Mule Variations, Alice, Blood Money). He also produced bands like Primus and Oysterhead (Stewart Copeland) and worked many years with Bill Laswell on projects with Ginger Baker, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Herbie Hancock, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, William S. Burroughs and Bob Marley. Also has credits on recordings with John Cale, Ornette Coleman and Elvis Costello.
The band recorded in Weesp, in a vintage studio designed in the sixties by the same man that designed the famous Abbey Road Studios. The mixing took place in California in the same studio and with the same gear used on Tom Waits’ Mule Variations, the album that triggered the band to contact Fritz. The arrangements on Back On Land have great variety. It’s not just the band playing, there’s room for strings and brass, vibraphone, triangle, and authentic keyboards like a wurlitzer, cp70 and a 1939 Steinway grand piano. On the album they ‘ve further refined the characteristic pleasant melancholic Cloudmachine sound. With a lot of focus on the lyrics and arrangements.
Athlete, The Wailers, Nouvelle Vague, Imelda May and Eat Static all confirmed for Guilfest. Athlete, who are confirmed to appear on the main stage at GuilFest on Saturday 11th July, came to prominence making their own brand of British Indie music in 2003 with their debut album, Vehicles and Animals, producing hugely popular singles such as “You Got the Style” and “El Salvador”. The album earned a Mercury Music Prize nomination and went on to sell over 250,000 copies. They played their first live session on UK radio on the Dermot O’Leary Show, BBC Radio 2. Their second album, Tourist enjoyed even greater success. Driven by two No1 radio airplay hits (‘Wires’ and ‘Half Light’) ‘Tourist’s double-platinum sales well exceeded those of ‘Vehicles And Animals. The band’s ‘Wires’ single was also named Best Contemporary Song at the prestigious Ivor Novello awards. Going from strength to strength, Athletes third album also proved very successful, hitting the number 5 spot in the UK albums charts. Athlete have embarked on tours all over the world, playing their music to huge crowds and their 4th album is expected in Summer 2009.
The Wailers, the most legendary reggae group of all time, are set to bring their unique flavour of Dub/Reggae to the GuilFest Main Stage, supporting Happy Mondays on Sunday 12th July. Together with former lead singer Bob Marley, the Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. In England alone, they’ve notched up over twenty chart hits, including seven Top 10 entries. Outside of their groundbreaking work with Marley, the Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, Kenny Chesney, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana and Alpha Blondy, as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear. As the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition – still led by original bassist and musical director Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett to this day – the Wailers have completed innumerable tours, playing to an estimated 24 million people across the globe. They have also been the first reggae band to tour new territories on many occasions, including Africa and the Far East.
Nouvelle Vague, the ground-breaking French project, who take a unique twist on classic punk, post punk and new wave hits reinterpreted in a bossa nova style, will headline the 2nd Stage on Friday 10th July. After the huge worldwide success of their eponymous debut album, released in 2004, (with over 200,000 copies sold at last count) the band’s subsequent albums ‘Band A Parte’, (2006) and ‘Late Night Tales’, (2007) have taken the group even further. Their versions of “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Depeche Mode and “Teenage Kicks” by the Undertones have been used in major UK TV adverts, while their version of Billy Idol’s ‘Dancing With Myself’ has been featured ion adverts for TLC’s show LA Ink.
Imelda May will be wowing the GuilFest crowds on the 2nd Stage on Saturday 11th July. Imelda was crowned 2008’s Best Female Newcomer at the prestigious Irish World Newspaper Awards and it’s not much of a stretch to see more acclaim ahead in 2009. She has shared stages with such megastars as Van Morrison and the Scissor Sisters, and provided vocals for a character in the forthcoming American gangster movie ‘Dark Streets’. Her shows have a reputation for being impassioned, all-or-nothing events. ‘Love Tattoo,’ her debut album, which is almost entirely self-written, has the same unbridled feel, whether she’s getting her teeth into a massive rockabilly party track or a sleazy after-midnight torch number. In 2008 Imelda found herself on ‘Later With Jools Holland,’ wowing an audience who included Jeff Beck, Elbow and Roots Manuva. Beck, in fact, made a point of telling Holland that he was only there to see her!
Eat Static, who headline GuilFest’s Funky End dance Tent on Friday 10th July, were formed in 1989 by Ozric Tentacles drummer Merv Pepler and keyboard player Joie Hinton as a separate creative outlet for the diverse range of electronic music that the pair were writing. Always intended as a live band, Eat Static can legitimately claim to be one of the UK’s first live techno outfits, cutting their teeth at many of the ‘orbital’ raves of the early 90′s. Since that time, Eat Static have played hundreds of gigs in the UK, Europe, the USA (touring with Moby and BT) and the Far East. These shows included a number of appearances at all the big UK and European festivals including Glastonbury and Dance Valley in Amsterdam. 2009 is the 50th anniversary of the founding of Island Records, arguably the most prestigious record label in the history of British music. To mark this milestone the label is entering into the world of book publishing. May 21st ’09 will see the publication of ‘KEEP ON RUNNING – THE STORY OF ISLAND RECORDS’ edited by Chris Salewicz (acclaimed author of recent best-selling Joe Strummer biog ‘Redemption Song’ as well as books on The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and many others) and produced by Universal Island Ltd. and The Island Trading Company Ltd.
‘KEEP ON RUNNING’ is a 226-page full-colour hard-cover commemoration of Island Records, started by Jamaican Chris Blackwell in 1959, the most illustrious record label that the British music business has ever known. Illustrated by copious rare images, including original artwork and photographs from the Island Records archives, ‘KEEP ON RUNNING’ will tell the story of this extraordinary label, its art and its artists, in a series of twelve essays by celebrated writers such as Paul Morley, Jon Savage, Sean O’Hagan, Vivien Goldman, Lloyd Bradley, David Katz, Robin Denselow, Sylvia Patterson, Richard Williams and Joe Boyd. Chapter headings include Out of Jamaica, The Pink Label, Season of the Witch, Glitterball, Roots-Rock Reggae, Singular Voices, The Tuff Gong, Globalisation, From Africa & Beyond, Re-birth Of The Cool and The New Millennium. The book will be published to coincide with the 50th anniversary celebrations of Island Records in May ’09: these include a large-scale, month-long exhibition of Island artwork and memorabilia in London’s Soho; a week of concerts by key artists at Shepherds Bush Empire; a 90 minute TV documentary about the label; a Radio 2 documentary; and deluxe re-releases of many iconic Island albums, which will continue throughout 2009.
Chris Blackwell founded the Island label in Kingston, Jamaica in 1959 with capital of just £1000. Relocating to London in the early 60s Blackwell built the most diverse and enviable back catalogue of any independent record label in history. From Island’s early Jamaican roots in ska and rock-steady, through the label’s expansion to become the cutting edge of progressive rock in the late 60s, and then on to the signing of such international superstars as Bob Marley and U2, Blackwell brought to Island a unique vision and passion which still informs the label’s approach to this day.
