It was actor Jamie Campbell Bower who starred in Burton’s rendition of Sweeney Todd that initiated this buzz. Bower was asked who he would pick to direct the fourth installment of the ‘Twilight’ Series, ‘Breaking Dawn,’ when he responded with Tim Burton’s name. With the fourth book arguably being the most intense, why wouldn’t Burton’s name be suggested? Actress Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen in the Twilight series, validated this comment to MTV at the MoMA Second Annual Film Benefit saying, “…if you look at what we’ve done from ‘Twilight’ to ‘New Moon’ to ‘Eclipse’ director-wise, they’re all completely different, because the tones are different. The fourth one’s a little odd, a little weird, and I definitely think that Tim Burton would put an amazing spin on it.” Of course he would. We have seen Burton take stories like the up
coming ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (coming out March 2010), and put the Burton effect on it. He has his own recognizable aesthetic, which created a very loyal following. This aesthetic runs deep with elements of German Expressionism, which focuses a lot on the gritty realities of the human experience by using a “moody” mise-en-scene, and forward, artistic style. With the premiere of ‘New Moon’ tonight at midnight, and the talk of the amazing look of ‘Eclipse,’ Tim Burton would unquestionably add a matchless perspective to this already passionate series, and its fans.
